Civil War Quotes
With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned my commission in the Army, and save in defense of my native State, with the sincere hope that my poor services may never be needed, I hope I may never be called on to draw my sword...

Civil War Quotes
"In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow-countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The Government will not assail you. You can have no conflict without being yourselves the aggressors. You have no oath registered in heaven to destroy the Government, while I shall have the most solemn one to 'preserve, protect, and defend it'."
Lincoln's First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1861.

Civil War Quotes
“You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it; and those who brought war into our country deserve all the curses and maledictions a people can pour out. I know I had no hand in making this war, and I know I will make more sacrifices to-day than any of you to secure peace.”

Civil War Quotes
It is well that war is so terrible -- lest we should grow too fond of it.

“In our Country . . . one class of men makes war and leaves another to fight it out.”

Civil War Quotes
Always mystify, mislead and surprise the enemy; and when you strike and overcome him, never let up in the pursuit. Never fight against heavy odds if you can hurl your own force on only a part of your enemy and crush it. A small army may thus destroy a large one, and repeated victory will make you invincible.

Civil War Quotes
[W]e made a great mistake in the beginning of our struggle, and I fear, in spite of all we can do, it will prove to be a fatal mistake. We appointed all our worst generals to command our armies, and all our best generals to edit the newspapers.

Civil War Quotes
"I think I understand what military fame is; to be killed on the field of battle and have your name misspelled in the newspapers."

Marker updates
Don,
As I may have indicated in the past, I plan to devote a lot of time this year updating my marker and courthouse websites. Thanks for keeping me informed on what you're doing. On Monday, I met with some people from the Georgia Department of Economic Development. They indicated that planning was beginning to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War (2011-15). They think that there will be a lot of interest in historical markers. In fact, they are going to be seeking funding from the General Assembly to take responsibility for the historical markers related to the Civil War. As you know, no one currently is doing anything to maintain, repair, repaint, and replace markers. So, this is welcome news.Ed

Missing markers
From Edwin L. Jackson, at UGA
Don, I read in the newspaper that they are trying to put money into DNR's budget to reopen the marker repair shop. In addition to missing markers, there are many that are in need of repair or repainting and are in a variety of DNR facilities (e.g., state park storage sheds). It's been shameful what has happened to our marker program, so maybe something will finally be done.Ed

Georgia Civil War Markers
Don Hogan is retired and lives in Sandy Springs, GA. His hobbies are tennis, the Civil War, and hunting waterfalls. Don is a contributor to CivilWarAlbum.com and the Historical Marker Database.
CivilWarAlbum.com is a wonderful site with over 2000 pages and 5500 photographs. Anyone who runs across CivilWarMarkers.com really needs to visit CivilWarAlbum.com.
Of the 950 Civil War Markers in Georgia, Don has photographed in excess of 400 of the markers in the greater Atlanta area. His goal is to continue to add to his collection of photographs but unlike other marker hunters he does not intend to track them all down!
In addition to his hunt for markers Don has visited numerous Civil War locations.
